Überblick
Der Eignungstest für das Medizinstudium (EMS) ist ein Eignugnstest, der in der Deutschschweiz für die Zulassung zum Medizinstudium verwendet wird. Es ist standardisiert und besteht aus 9 einzelnen Untertests mit je 18 Aufgaben. Die Aufgabenstellung ist jedes Jahr identisch, lediglich der spezifische Inhalt der einzelnen Aufgabe variiert von Jahr zu Jahr. Die einzelnen Untertests werden im Nachfolgenden noch genau erläutert.
Insgesamt sind 9x18 = 162 Punkte möglich.Gemäss den Testherstellern sind die Tests so konzipiert, dass «im Durchschnitt etwa nur 50 Prozent der Aufgaben richtig beantwortet werden» [1]. Dies kommt nicht nur wegen der Schwere der einzelnen Aufgabe zu Stande, sondern vor allem durch den immensen Zeitdruck: Für jeden Untertest steht nur ein knapp bemessenes Zeitfenster zur Verfügung.
Genaues zu den Untertests
Wie erwähnt, kann man bei den einzelnen jeweils 18 Punkte holen. Dabei ist das Prinzip einfach: Jeder Untertest besteht aus 18 Aufgaben und es stehen immer 5 Antwortmöglichkeiten zur Auswahl, von denen genau eine richtig ist; jede richtige Lösungswahl auf dem Antwortblatt gibt einen Punkt, falsche Lösungswahlen oder fehlende bzw. mehrfache Lösungswahlen (mehr als eine Möglichkeit angewählt) geben 0 Punkte Einzige Ausnahme hier ist der letzte Untertest "Konzentriertes und sorgfältiges Arbeiten", dazu später mehr. Nachfolgend eine tabellarische Übersicht der einzelnen Untertests:

Konzentriertes und sorgfältiges Arbeiten
Dieser Test unterscheidet sich vom Aufbau her von den anderen Untertests: Anstelle einzelner Fragen gibt es hier einfach ein Blatt mit 40 Zeilen à 40 Zeichen, insgesamt also 1600 Zeichen. Dabei können die Zeichen Buchstaben, Zahlen oder auch kleine Bilder wie Smileys oder Würfel sein. Bis dato (2021) wurden noch keine Zeichen gemischt – also hast du entweder 1600 Buchstaben oder 1600 Zahlen oder 1600 komische Bilder vor dir.
Zu Beginn des Untertests wird eine Art Spielregel bekanntgegeben, nach der du die Zeichen markieren musst. Beispielsweise musst du allewmarkieren, falls davor einmsteht, oder alle gerade Zahlen. Anschliessend stehen dir acht Minuten zur Bearbeitung zur Verfügung.
Bei der Auswertung zählt jedes Zeichen, das du richtig nach der Spielregel markiert hast, als +1; jedes falsch markierte (Zeichen, das du nicht hättest markieren sollen, aber markiert hast) sowie jedes übersehene Zeichen (Zeichen, die du hättest markieren sollen, aber nicht markiert hast) als -1. Jeder Testteilnehmende hat also am Schluss eine Art Gesamtscore. Anschliessend werden die Punkte nach dieser Gesamtscore verteilt: die besten 5.6% erhalten 18 Punkte, die nächsten 5.6% 17 Punkte etc. – es ist also hier essentiell, schnell (möglichst viel +1), aber auch genau (möglichst wenig -1) zu arbeiten.
Geprüfte Fähigkeiten
Die Eignungstests sind so konzipiert, dass sie den Studienerfolg zuverlässig vorhersagen können. Das liegt daran, dass sie Fähigkeiten überprüfen, die auch im Medizinstudium von grosser Bedeutung sind. In erster Linie gehört hierzu logisches Denken, Merkfähigkeit und visuelles Auffassungsvermögen. Zudem wird ein grosser Zeitdruck aufgebaut, der sowohl die Konzentrationsfähigkeit als auch die Stressresilienz auf die Probe stellt.
Beim Erstellen der Untertests wurde ein Hauptaugenmerk darauf gelegt, dass die geprüften Fähigkeiten nicht innerhalb kürzester Zeit aufgebaut werden kann. Damit wollen die Testhersteller verhindern, dass die Teilnehmenden einfach "schnell den Test lernen" können. Hierbei unterscheiden sich die Untertests jedoch massgeblich: Während das logische Denken sowie die Stressresilienz bei den meisten Menschen nicht schnell steigerbar ist, können Merkfähigkeit sowie visuelles Auffassungsvermögen häufig innert weniger Wochen massiv verbessert werden.

Ablauf am Testtag
Der Ablauf des EMS wurde im Zuge der SARS-CoV2-Pandemie mehrmals angepasst. Bis 2019 wurden die Untertests auf zwei Halbtage mit einer einstündigen Mittagspause dazwischen verteilt. In den Jahren 2020 und 2021 wurden drei Untertests und die Mittagspause gestrichen. Ende 2021 gab swissuniversities an, den Test mit allen Untertests, jedoch ohne Pause durchzuführen. Nachfolgend der genaue Ablauf:
Die Untertests werden in zwei Testhefte aufgeteilt. Zu Beginn des EMS erhalten alle Teilnehmenden das Testheft A sowie das Antwortblatt A, in welches alle Antworten eingetragen werden. Nach der Einprägephase der Merktests werden Testheft und Antwortblatt A eingesammelt und das Testheft B sowie dessen Antwortblatt ausgeteilt. Nach dem Untertest "Konzentriertes und sorgfältiges Arbeiten" wird das Testheft B sowie das Antwortblatt eingesammelt.
Bemerkung:Bis zum Update 2022 gab es zu jedem Testheft ein separates Antwortblatt. Wie es ab 2022 aussieht, ist zurzeit noch offen. Wir gehen aber schwer davon aus, dass das System beibehalten wird.
Wichtig gilt hier: Jeder Untertest darf nur in der dafür vorgesehenen Bearbeitungszeit gelöst werden!Ihr dürft also weder zu einem kommenden Untertest weiterblättern, noch zu einem vorherigen Untertest zurückgehen. Habt ihr alle Aufgaben eines Untertests gelöst, dürft ihr im gleichen Untertest rumblättern oder beim Antwortblatt Lösungsmöglichkeiten auswählen. Ihr dürft aberniezu einem anderen Untertest blättern!
Des Weiteren ist wichtig zu wissen: Es gibt keine Pausen zwischen den Untertests! Sobald die Zeit eines Untertests abgelaufen ist, kündigt der Testleiter den nächsten Untertest an und die Zeit für diesen beginnt. Solltet ihr etwas essen, trinken oder auf die Toilette gehen, läuft die Zeit weiterhin.
Auswertung
Wie oben erwähnt, besteht der Eignungstest aus Single Choice Aufgaben und jede richtige Antwort gibt 1 Punkt. Falsche Antworten und nicht beantwortete Fragen geben 0 Punkte - somit ist es also essentiell, bei jeder Frage eine Antwort auszuwählen, da es keine Minuspunkte für falsche Antworten gibt.
Es wird nur das Antwortblatt ausgewertet!Es spielt also erstens keine Rolle, wie die Antworten zustande gekommen sind - ob du hochgradige Differentialgleichungen gelöst oder einfach geraten hast. Genauso wenig ist es aber irrelevant, was du in deinem Testheft stehen hast! Das einzige, was zählt, ist das Antwortblatt! Trag daher am besten jede Antwort sofort ins Antwortblatt ein, sonst verschenkst du wertvolle Punkte!
Am Schluss hat jede/r Teilnehmende eine Gesamtpunktzahl. Anhand dieser Gesamtpunktzahl wird eine Platzierung berechnet, die angibt, wie gut du in Relation zu den anderen TestteilnehmerInnen bist. Die Verteilung der Studienplätze erfolgt dann über diese relative Platzierung. Es geht also nicht nur darum, wie viele Punkte du holst, sondern auch, wie gut du im Vergleich zu den anderen bist!
Bemerkung: Die genaue Zuteilung ist ein komplexes Thema. Insbesondere ist die zentrale Rolle des Steuerkantons vielen nicht bekannt. Hierzu werden wir später einen separaten Artikel veröffentlichen.
